Autotransplantation is a procedure that more dentists should be aware of and consider for patients with dental trauma or ectopic teeth with poor prognosis. The added benefit of transplantation over implants is it can be performed in growing individuals, providing a quicker aesthetic and biological option for patients. Using modern 3D technology and surgical techniques, autotransplantation has become a viable alternative for patients with severe trauma or hopeless prognosis, leading to a better quality of life.

The 2017 world workshop on periodontal disease issued a new classification of periodontal diseases but it also recommended that all patients should be assessed for the patient’s risk factors (Chapple et al 2018). Based upon these recommendations our specialist periodontal practice has introduced a multidisciplinary approach to evaluating periodontal cases, which will allow us to institute personalised treatment approaches. The evaluation included standard periodontal evaluations, medical practitioner risk assessments and genetic assessment of the known single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with periodontitis. Previously undiagnosed and untreated medical risk factors have been identified in 14% of cases who are now under medical care. Data related to the multidisciplinary findings and the genetics identified will be presented. These include an outline of vitamin D deficiency and its relationship to periodontal disease.
